A Summary of UK Hate Speech Laws

Free speech is a huge topic to condense, historically, socially and culturally. Essentially the American view is free speech is sacrosanct, the supreme court will refuse to rule on content, only context. The government is not considered trustworthy to monitor free speech, the court upholds this. The European view is that free speech is balanced against personal protections of discrimination, offence and distress caused. The balance seemingly going towards the offended. Personal liberty takes second place in order to maintain the peace.

Firstly, Australia does not have an explicit First Amendment equivalent enshrining the protection of freedom of speech in their Constitution. The Australian high court has stated in the past that free speech is implied in the Australian constitution, but they have went against this ruling in several court cases, and there are dozens of laws restricting or limiting what one would see as the right to free speech.

In this report, 164 liberalist responses to a poll here which was focused on Universal Basic Income (UBI) or Universal Health Care (UHC) were analyzed. The poll was diffused during two weeks on the liberalist Facebook page.
